What a waste!

Lost and Found in front of Room 22

The Lost and Found is growing daily. Jackets, sweaters, sweatshirts, water bottles, backpacks and lunch boxes are all being collected on the campus if left behind. If you lost something, please come by Mr. Andy Kissner’s Room, Room 22, to claim your missing item.  If things are not picked up by the end of the year, they will be washed by Kissner and donated to the Goodwill, Salvation Army, or other community services.

The amount of things found left behind on the RMS campus is astounding.  This brings to mind the question…What do RMS students waste everyday?

The following are the answers from Mrs. Lisa Case’s Sixth Grade Science Classes.

Period 4– time, tissues, paper, plastic, food water bottles, water, supplies (such as pencils, pens, erasers, etc.), lollipop sticks, space, gum, money and clothes (such as jackets and sweatshirts)

Period 6-teachers’ patience, time (theirs and teachers’), opportunities, cell phone battery (technology), supplies (paper, erasers, pens, pencils, and ink), food, plastic (H2O bottles, bags, and containers), energy, electricity, recycable things (cans), gas rubber, tissues, health, respect, and clothes

Case asked her students to calculate how much money has been wasted in jackets and sweatshirts for the past three years.  Here are the results:

Period 4 Calculations

Problem:  RMS students lose 350 sweatshirts/jackets on the average per year.  If the average sweatshirt/jacket cost $20 each, how much money worth of sweatshirts/jackets is lost each year?  How much is lost every three years?

Answers: $7,000 worth of sweatshirts/jackets are lost each year

$21,000 worth of sweatshirts/jackets are lost in three years

At the end of the third quarter, 200 sweatshirts/jackets were in the Lost and Found.  Total average cost- $4,000

Period 6 Calculations

Problem:  RMS students lose 350 sweatshirts/jackets on the average per year.  If the average sweatshirt/jacket cost $30 each, how much money worth of sweatshirts/jackets is lost each year?  How much is lost every three years?

(Period 6 felt that Period 4 was underestimating the cost seeing that a lot of the clothes are from Abercrombie and Fitch, Pink and other high end stores.)

Answers:  $10,500 worth of sweatshirts/jackets are lost each year

$31,500 worth of sweatshirts/jackets are lost in three years

At the end of the third quarter, 200 sweatshirts/jackets were in the Lost and Found. Total average cost- $6,000

What are you wasting?  Think about it and claim your items in the Lost and Found today!
