Student Perspective: Try Something New At McDonald’s And Chick-fil-A

By Sarah D.

This summer, you may consider exploring some unfamiliar foods at familiar restaurants. Not unfamiliar in “Oh my gosh what am I eating?” But, it’s unfamiliar in “I never knew they served this here!”

When you stroll into McDonald’s just craving that Big Mac, think again about what you are about to eat. A Big Mac sandwich has 550 calories in it and 29 grams of fat! That’s 29% of what your daily value of fat should be in one day.  Now you may say “That’s really unhealthy,” but don’t go ahead and order the Angus Deluxe. It has 750 calories! What you could order instead, if you still want a burger or sandwich, is a McChicken Sandwich or a regular cheeseburger. They are both less in calories and fat.

On the other hand, Chick-fil-A’s Chicken Sandwich is only 440 calories. (McDonald’s is 510.) Chicken is not as unhealthy as red meat like beef. Chick-fil-A does not even serve red meat at all. That’s a better choice if you are trying to stay on a low-calorie diet or just eat a little healthier.

You may not know this, because you may always order the same things whenever you go to McDonald’s or Chick-fil-A, but there are other choices that are a little more nutritional. At McDonald’s, they serve salads and wraps. The salads range from 190 to 450 calories, depending on what is in the salad. The wraps range from about 250 to 350 calories, also depending what is in the wrap.  McDonald’s also serves nutrients-rich breakfast, like their Fruit and Maple and Blueberry Banana Nut Oatmeals.  They also serve parfaits, like their Fruit N’ Yogurt Parfait. Almost all of these tasty options are fairly low in calories and fat.

Chick-fil-A also serves low-calorie meals.  They also serve wraps and salads that both range from about 150 to 475 calories.  They serve breakfast as well. They serve oatmeal and egg sandwiches that are lower in calories.

Both of these restaurants have many more selections than the ones listed above. But, you don’t have to avoid them forever more. When you do go to one of these restaurants, try not to order your favorite high-calorie sandwich or shake every time.

So this summer time, when you enter one of these fast food places, try a lighter meal like a wrap or a salad.  It will benefit you in the end.
