RMS began the process of organizing a fundraiser campaign Wednesday afternoon to support the disaster relief efforts in the Philippine Islands from the Super Typhoon Haiyan (Yolanda). Typhoon Haiyan, one of the world’s strongest typhoons ever recorded, lashed the Philippines and has devastated provinces in the country’s central regions, affecting millions of people. The planning team consists of Chad Mabery, Michael Fujii, and Karen Benedict. The sense of urgency to support the people in need from this disaster could not be higher, as hunger and disease are now making a dire situation even worse. The latest death toll was raised this morning, November 15, to 3,621.
Our relief effort will include the following:
Ø Monday, November 18 – Grade level assembly, (12-15 minutes, starting at 11:20am, in the Cafe), disaster overview and relief effort plan
- · 6th grade – Begins at 11:20
- · 7th grade – Begins at 11:40
- · 8th grade – Begins at 12:00
Ø Friday, November 22 – School wide assembly (15 minutes, starting at 12:00, on the blacktop), community thank you and presentation of food/supplies to ALAS Cargo Philippines representative
Ø Monday – Friday: Community food and supply collection/drop off @ RMS, donation/t-shirt campaign by RMS Student Council
- · Anyone who donates $15 or more dollars towards the relief efforts will receive a free “Relief for Haiyan” t-shirt, designed by our own Michael Fujii.
Please let Chad Mabery, Michael Fujii, or Karen Benedict know if you have any questions or additional support.
- · We have begun working with ALAS Cargo (http://alascargo.com/Alas/
pages/home.jsf) and BlackLava. ALAS Cargo’s office is in Carson. They are shipping for free cargo containers with relief supplies to the Philippines, as they also did for the Philippines disaster effort in 2009. The shipment we are collecting food and supplies for is going out on November 25. BlackLava is a screen-printing company in Torrance with Asian roots. BlackLava is helping to support the donation funds collection.
